Perfection (A.K.A. Foesum) feat. Snoop Doggy Dogg - Understand Perfection (1992)

Perfection (later known as Foesum), a very talented group out of Long Beach, California, play host to one of rap legend Snoop Dogg's earliest guest appearances. You may find this one online under the title "Let 'em Understand Perfection", "Understand Perfection", "Let 'em Understand" or some other variation of.

Details on the recording are scarce, however, it is likely that this was recorded in 1991 before Snoop signed to Death Row Records in 1992. This can be deduced by Snoop's voice sounding similar in style and tone to recordings on "The Chronic" and "Deep Cover". Also, the reference to "perfection is perfected so I'ma let 'em understand" being in "Nuthin' But a 'G' Thang".

"Understand Perfection"'s first appearance was on the 1992 independent compilation "Please Pass The Mic" showcasing other Long Beach rap acts.

The song also is said to contain subliminal disses towards another Long Beach rapper, Domino who would have a hit of his own in 1993 called "Getto Jam". Domino was originally in the group Perfection and left to pursue a solo career. Ironically, Snoop and Domino's style have been compared to as very similar.

Snoop and Perfection group members T-Dubb, DJ Glaze, MNMsta, and Wayniac all have verses on the hypnotic piano sample of Grover Washington Jr.'s "Knucklehead" laced with thumping 808 drums.

The track would see more official release in 1996. It appeared as a bonus track on album titled after the groups former name, "Perfection" under the group's new name Foesum.

My first exposure to the song was on the fan-made, but widely circulated, Snoop Doggy Dogg album "Over the Counter". Speaking of "Over the Counter", it has been debated for years whether it is an actual album or not. However, that's a story that will be covered at another time!
